It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Professor Wolfgang Waldstein, who became Honorary Doctor of the University in 2012, gave his soul back to his Creator on 17 October 2023. Professor Waldstein was born in Hangö, Finland, in 1928. His father fled St Petersburg after the events of the Russian Revolution. After the outbreak of the Finnish-Soviet war in 1939, the family fled to Austria, where they settled in Salzburg in 1940. Wolfgang Waldstein habilitated in Innsbruck in 1963 and became Professor of Roman Law at the University of Innsbruck in 1964. From 1965 to 1992 he was Professor of Roman Law at the University of Salzburg; from 1968 to 1969 he was Rector of the University. From 1996 to 1998 he was Ordinary of the Faculty of Civil Law at the University of Lateran. Among his best known works are the ‘Entscheidungsgrundlagen der klassischen römischen Juristen’, published in 1976; 'Operae libertorum. Untersuchungen zur Dienstpflicht freielassener Sklaven" (1986), his monograph "Teoria generale del diritto. Dall'antichita ad oggi" (2001), and his 2011 book "Ins Herz geschrieben. Das Naturrecht als Fundament einer menschlichen Gesellschaft" (2012), also published in Hungarian, to which Pope Benedict XVI referred in his speech to the Bundestag on 22 September 2011.
