Successes at the National Constitutional Court Simulation Competition

2023.11.27.

On 23 November, the final of the National Constitutional Court Simulation Competition (ABSZIM) was held for the fifth time. The event, jointly organised by Mathias Corvinus Collegium, the Hungarian Lawyers' Association and the Constitutional Court, has become the biggest competition for students interested in constitutional law, where teams of four students can participate after months of preparation and after passing several qualifying rounds.

In the final of the competition, which involved eight law faculties and the National University of the Czech Republic, 13 teams qualified, three of them representing our Faculty. We were looking forward to the final with high expectations, as the students from Pázmány came third two years ago and second last year.

The teams that reached the final had to draft a constitutional court decision based on a fictional case, comment on each other's drafts and defend them in the debate at the session. This year, the topic was related to the use of artificial intelligence, and according to the case law, the petitioner's thesis on artificial intelligence was declared inadmissible by the university, his claim was rejected by the courts, and he then appealed to the Constitutional Court.

In the final, one judge from each team participated as a constitutional judge and three competitors as advisers. The session was chaired by Dr Tamás Sulyok, President of the Constitutional Court. The constitutional judges first presented their own drafts and then tried to reach a consensus in the debate, while defending their own positions. After the anonymous written scoring prepared earlier in the competition, a panel of five judges scored the teams' oral performances at the end of the day-long competition.

Based on written and oral performance

the "Stairway 4" team from the University of Padua came first,

and our team "Iustitia4" won the special prize for the best draft.

Our team "ALMA1" also performed outstandingly,

and our students continued their successful performance over the years.

It is particularly pleasing that four of the 12 students from the University of Szeged are also members of the Zlinszky János Szakkollégium, three of whom were part of the winning team.

They are members of the "Lépcső 4" team, which won first place:

  • Ferenc Deák
  • Csongor István Detre ("judge of the constitution")
  • Ágnes Maucha
  • Zsombor Márton Rigó

Members of the special prize winning team "Iustitia4":

  • Zita Kocsis Lívia ("judge of the constitution")
  • Kovács Napsugár
  • Csenge Muróczki
  • Dorka Pintér Bernadett

The „ALMA1” team members::

  • Dudás Márk („alkotmánybíró”)
  • Hérics Attila
  • Lukács Alexa
  • Merczel Lúcia

The teams were prepared by Gábor Kurunczi, Anett Pogácsás and Ádám Varga.

Congratulations to all of our students!
