The Young Property Lawyers’ Forum (YPLF) 2024 Annual Conference took place at the Faculty of Law of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest. Themed "Property Law: Old and New," the conference brought together early career researchers from around the world to explore the evolving landscape of property law.
The opening remarks highlighted the conference's focus on examining both traditional principles and contemporary challenges within property law. Throughout the two-day event, attendees engaged in discussions spanning a wide range of topics, from doctrinal renewal to the impact of emerging technologies and global issues on proprietary rights.
Distinguished keynote speakers, including professors István Sándor, Emőd Veress, and Zoltán Csehi, provided valuable insights into various aspects of property law, such as wealth management legal structures, ownership in post-socialist contexts, and the role of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
One of the central themes that emerged from the conference was the dynamic nature of property law, which integrates ancient concepts with modern challenges. Property law can be an exciting subject that blends ancient ideas coming from roman law and the Middle Ages with new challenges involving global problems, including AI, property in data, the energy transition, cross border security rights, the transplant of the idea of trusts from the common law to the civilian tradition.
Hosted by the Department for Private Law of the Faculty of Law of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University and sponsored additionally by the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies (MABISZ), the conference provided a platform for lively exchanges, idea sharing, and networking among participants.
Overall, the YPLF 2024 Annual Conference challenged the conventional perception of property law as static and parochial, showcasing its relevance and dynamism in addressing contemporary legal issues on a global scale. It demonstrated that property law is far from being a boring topic; rather, it continues to evolve and adapt to meet the challenges of the modern world.
The organisers of the conference were Konstanze von Schütz from McGill University, Canada (YPLF Co-Chair); Aleksa Radonjić from Union University, Serbia (YPLF Co-Chair); Ernesto Vargas Weil from Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, UK (YPLF Co-Chair); and Ferenc Szilágyi from Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Hungary (local co-organiser).
