Report of the workshop

The 'Building Legal Terminology Databases' online workshop, organized by Ereky Public Law Research Center and the Law and Language research group of PPKE JÁK together with LITHME working group 2 and held on 1 February 2022, generated vivid interest. As simultaneous interpreting to English was provided, participants from outside Hungary also attended the event, along with Hungarian practicing legal translators, interpreters, terminologists and researchers, as well as present and former students of the Legal Translator Training Programme running in PPKE JÁK.

Réka Somssich and Endre Gáspár, heads of the comprehensive project targeting the translation of Hungarian legal codes into English and run by the Ministry of Justice of Hungary, introduced the methods and strategies applied during the work.

Tímea Palotai-Torzsás, lawyer-linguist, presented the Juremy online search engine, which assists legal translator and researchers in terminology-mining by integrating already-existing databases like, e.g. IATE or EUR-Lex.

Dóra Mária Tamás, Chief Terminologist of the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation talked about the general characteristics of legal terminology databases, the approach to be applied when working with them, and the challenges of managing legal terminology.

All the presentations were practical in their perspective, useful websites and publications were introduced and shared with the audience.
