José Reis: hub and spoke cartels

2019.10.10.
José Reis, associate professor of the University of Porto, gave a presentation about hub and spoke cartels.

Participating undergraduate and doctoral students, as well as practicing lawyers heared about the history and current challenges of these complex anti-competitive practices. These arrangements exist in many countries, especially in the retail trade of consumer products when producers are forced to co-ordinate price increases at large retail chains if they intend to raise their supply prices tot he retailers.

The first hub and spoke cartel case is underway in Portugal. In Hungary, the GVH has recently terminated a thorough investigation concerning the household paper sector for lack of sufficient evidence. the slides of the presentation can be read here.

The event formed part of an EU grant awarded to Tihamer Toth, Jean Monnet Chair of EU competition law.
