Dr. Francis Kariuki, lecturer at Strathmore University, Nairobi delivered his lunchtime lecture at Pázmány Law School, Budapest on the role of traditional dispute resolution mechanisms on ensuring access to justice in Kenya. Professor Kariuki discussed the colonial legacy of formal courts and the new Kenyan constitution and its provision mandating the promotion of local ADR. The diversity, legitimacy and effectiveness of the these restorative justice systems was also presented. Finally, Professor Kariuki mentioned the criticisms geared towards these dispute resolution mechanisms, with a special emphasis on the Western understanding of human rights.
